InBrain in ISMRM 2025

During the 2025 edition of the International Symposium of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), held between May 10 and 15 at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center in Honolulu, Professor Carlos Ernesto Garrido Salmon, coordinator of inBrainLab, presented the work entitled “Distribution of Paramagnetic Ions in Ex-vivo Human Brain Samples Using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy”. The research was developed by InBrain members PhD student José Henrique Monteiro de Azevedo, master's student Andre Avanzine and our graduate Me. Fábio Seiji Otsuka with collaboration from several scientific partners. The study investigated, through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, the distribution of iron and copper ions in different regions of the human brain, contributing to the understanding of metal homeostasis and its relationship with neurodegenerative diseases.

The presentation took place on May 12, from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., during the session "Imaging Insights in the Brain: Brain Structure, Function & More", in the traditional poster format. Participation in one of the most relevant events in the field of magnetic resonance imaging and neuroimaging highlighted the methodological rigor of the study, carried out with ex-vivo samples of 19 human brains, using advanced techniques such as EPR and mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Participation in the event also allowed access to discussions on emerging technologies and integration with global research initiatives in translational neuroscience.

We congratulate Professor Carlos Garrido and the entire team involved for this important contribution to neuroscience and bioimaging. The work of inBrainLab reinforces the role of Brazilian public universities as protagonists in the generation of excellent knowledge and in the development of collaborative and translational research. The research was supported by important science funding agencies, such as the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), in addition to partial support from the National Institute on Aging (NIH - USA). With this participation, inBrainLab reaffirms its commitment to the training of researchers, the production of innovative knowledge and the internationalization of Brazilian science.
